The Noval, "The Skin I'm In" by Sharon Flakes is about a young girl named Maleeka around the age of 12 because she's in the 7th grade and is being bullied in school by a another student who is a male named John-John. This student is calling is calling Meleeka all kinds of mean names because she's darker then all the other students in her school. Also Maleeka and her mother are going through some hard times because her father died three years ago and her mother is just now starting to get herself together. This is hard for Maleeka in many ways because ever since her father died Maleekas mother as found it very hard to earn money for the both of them. Maleekas mother don't have money like other parent in the neighborhood so she has to go and make Maleeka clothes herself instead of having the money to buy them from the store. Maleekas mother cant really sow that good so the clothes that her mother makes for her falls apart in school and some are made very unevenly. One pant leg is always higher then the other, or a collar is always to big and falls off her shoulders. At school this gives John-John another reason to make fun of Maleeka in front of everyone, he would get everyone to sing a mean song about Maleeka, "Maleeka, Maleeka we really wanna miss her but she so black can't even see her" that's a really mean song. But in a good way this sort of helps them out because after Maleekas father died her mother turned to sewing to confer her from the sadness.
Maleekas "friend" Charlese nickname Char is giving Maleeka some of her clothes to wear everyday in the girls bathroom so that Maleeka doesn't have to wear uneven, hammy down Salvation Army clothes that her mother makes her and gets from the Salvation Army. Even though Char is helping Maleeka she is also being very mean to Maleeka all the time, embarrassing her in front of everyone, making Maleeka do everything for her like shes some kind of slave, and forcing her to do bad and dangerous things that she don't want to do. Things sorta changed for Maleeka when a new teacher Ms. Sounders came to her school. Ms Saunders helped Maleeka see herself different, not just someone so is Black. Ms. Saunders helped Maleeka by showing her she was a good writer and that's how Maleeka released all her stress, At the end of the story Maleeka was framed for buring Ms. Saunders class room when Char made her it, she really didn't have no choice she is scared of Char. There was a boy name Caleb who was the smartest boy in the school and also the sweetest. This boy had a crush on Maleeka and he always told her that he likes the way she looks and wrote her notes and love stories. When the kids at the school found out that Caleb and Maleeka was hanging out they started making fun of her even more, and Caleb left Maleeka, because he thought that if he left Maleeka alone then no one would mess with her anymore but it didn't actually turn out like that they still made fun of her. But then Caleb came back to Maleeka at the end of the story by writing her a sweet love poem.
Would you be my Almaond Joy
My chocolate chip, my Hershey Kiss
My Sweet dark chocolate butter chip?
Hand and hand we'd walk to class
and sit and talk in sweet grass.
Rollar coaster way up high,
pick moonbeans from out the sky.
Would you be my Almond Joy
My chocolate chip, my Hershey Kiss
My sweet dark chocolate butter crips?
